hicles to stop functioning while they are being driven. According to Toyota’s official announcement of this massive Prius recall, this software defect affects all of the third-generation Prius vehicles, and it is causing certain transistors in these cars to overheat, which triggers the vehicle to shut down and the cars to immediately stop running.<

The Toyota Prius recall was officially issued in mid-February 2014, and the vehicle manufacturer is reportedly still in the process of contacting Prius owners to notify them of the recall, as well as of their options for getting their vehicle repaired at no cost to them. While more than 710,000 recalled vehicles are reportedly located in North American, more than 1 million are in Japan, Europe and other regions.

In issuing this recall, Toyota was quick to explain that, although the manufacturer has received more than 450 reports from consumers regarding this software defect, there have not been any reported accidents, injuries or deaths caused by this malfunction to date.

Recall Does Not Bode Well for Toyota, Industry Professionals Note

In the wake of this Toyota Prius recall, some industry professionals are conjecturing that this may be the first of many recalls to come for Toyota and other vehicle manufacturers in 2014. Specifically, these professionals have pointed out that:

  • The increasing reliance on software to run vehicles is increasing the risk of software defects and, in turn, vehicle malfunctions.
  • Vehicle manufacturers are doing their best to try to interchange parts like transistors between different types of vehicles (in a measure to try to reduce their manufacturing costs); however, some of these interchanged parts are made for specific vehicles and, consequently, are at risk of malfunctioning when they are used in vehicles they were not designed for.
