Labor Day weekend is upon us. That means a three-day weekend to enjoy the end of summer, BBQs and fun times with loved ones.
It also means, however, that a national DUI campaign is underway and that all motorists should be aware that cops are out in force this weekend, ready to arrest impaired drivers, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has warned.
Elaborating on why this DUI crackdown is so important, Colonel Bret Johnson, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, has stated:
Impaired driving continues to be a huge concern on Missouri roadways… We will continue our year round efforts of enforcing Missouri’s DWI laws and through this campaign create public awareness to the dangers substance-impaired driving causes on our highways.
Noting just how devastating the impacts of drunk driving can be, Bill Whitfield, executive chair to the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety, has explained that:
Each day lives are drastically changed or lost in preventable traffic crashes caused by substance-impaired driving… In 2014, 197 people were killed, 703 seriously injured in Missouri crashes that involved at least one substance-impaired driver.
Plan Ahead & Remember these Tips to Avoid Being Arrested for DUI
Over this coming weekend or any time you may be out consuming alcohol, here are some important things to remember in order to avoid being arrested for allegedly driving drunk:
- Don’t drive if you have consumed alcohol. Buzzed driving is drunk driving, and only having a few drinks can still put you over the legal limit.
- Keep numbers of cabs or sober friends on hand for whenever you may need a ride. Consider downing ride-sharing apps (or service info) as well so that you have a few options for rides if or when you need them.
- When you can’t find a ride and may be stranded somewhere, find a place to stay, instead of driving and gambling with the possibility of arrest. Sleeping on a couch or in a hotel room for one night is way more convenient than having to deal with a DUI case for the next six months (or longer).
